A proposal to protect international students from deportation in instances of workplace exploitation and allow them to issue entitlement claims has been submitted to the Australian immigration minister.

Current student visas prevent international students from working more than 40-hours-per fortnight while studying. RLC argues that this makes student workers vulnerable to exploitation. We have submitted a proposal to the Migrant Workers' Taskforce calling for an amendment to section 499 of the Migration Act, instructing decision makers not to cancel a visa in certain circumstances where a student has breached the 40-hour-per-fortnight condition.
