Broadcast on 2ser FM's The Daily on Thursday, 18 May 2017.
RLC's employment and discrimination solicitor Dr Linda Tucker spoke to Sydney's Radio 2ser The Daily regarding Transport Workers' Union of Australia secretary Tony Sheldon's comments to ABC Radio's AM on Tuesday that employers who underpay employees should face jail time for "wage theft".
"Tony's comments reflect the frustration we all feel that there are plenty of laws in place but it is incredibly difficult to pin down rouge employers," Tucker said. "We agree with Tony that there seems to be a business model in place for certain rogue employers to rip off employees."
Tucker noted that "implementation, enforcement, and compliance issues" exist around current legislation in place to protect workers.
Tucker also stated the increased penalties proposed for employers found to be exploiting workers currently before Parliament as part of the Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Vulnerable Workers) Bill "demonstrates current penalties [for rogue employers] are too low".
