Volunteering opportunities

In 1977, Redfern Legal Centre opened its doors with just one paid staff member, barely any money, and a team of passionate and experienced volunteers with a vision to increase access to justice. Over 45 years later, volunteers are still integral to everything we do. We simply could not maintain our free legal services without the help of a dedicated team of volunteer solicitors, legal assistants, practical legal training students, pro bono partners and firms.

Redfern Legal Centre relies upon the dedication of experienced volunteer solicitors to help us meet legal demand. We only have limited openings for additional volunteers throughout the year, but encourage you to submit an expression of interest online.

Volunteer Legal Assistants build skills in communicating with the public, assisting people in crisis, client interviewing and drafting instructions for lawyers. They also increase their knowledge of referral services and the practical application and constraints of the law.

    Diversity and equal opportunity

Redfern Legal Centre strives to be an inclusive, diverse and culturally safe workplace. We welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from diverse cultural backgrounds, people with disability, and LGBTIQ+ people.

Redfern Legal Centre supports Equal Employment Opportunity principles in the selection of volunteers and staff. If you require some adjustment to the workplace to enable you to meet the selection criteria, please contact the Communications & Volunteer Manager on 02 9698 7277 or info@rlc.org.au for a confidential discussion about your access requirements.

Please let us know if there is anything about you that may cause an issue to arise under the Legal Profession Uniform Law Act (NSW) No 16a. For instance, please note section 121 of Legal Profession Uniform Law (disqualification or conviction for serious offence) and any necessary approvals required.
