The reforms, announced by the Victorian state government in response to a review of the Residential Tenancies Act, are designed to make renting fairer and give tenants more rights.
Measures include the introduction of longer leases, reduced bond payments, banning rental bidding and limiting rent increases to once-per-year.
Kimberly explains that such changes are urgently needed to address the power imbalance that exists between landlords and tenants. She says currently many tenants are afraid to challenge rental increases or request urgent and non-repairs for fear that they may be evicted.
