Conducted by TUNSW and TAAS between 1 December 2016 and 12 January 2017, the survey asked people who have lived in a sharehouse in New South Wales over the last five years about their experience and expectations of sharehousing.
The survey received 317 responses and found that many people, across all ages, are living in shared housing without written sub-tenancy agreements, leaving them with no legal protection against unfair eviction or access to effective dispute resolution services. The survey also found that disputes among housemates were common, and were often left unresolved. Respondents overwhelmingly indicated they would support reform to clarify and improve the law for sharehouse residents.
