The Redfern Legal Centre Clinic is the result of a partnership between RLC and the University of Sydney, and is the latest in a series of experiential learning programs developed by RLC for students from select universities.
Through a combination of structured learning, research and casework, our student clinics have proven highly successful at deepening students' understanding of legal issues. By applying legal principles and processes within a real-world setting, students are able to translate theory into practice, giving them a much broader understanding of the complexity of issues involved in the provision of social justice.
Under the supervision of RLC's Employment and Discrimination solicitor, Dr. Linda Tucker, the ten students selected for the Sydney Law School elective are working on real cases booked in for our weekly employment and discrimination advice night, assisting with case and file management and attending client appointments, alongside RLC's solicitors.
The students gain experience in all steps of the process, from identifying and researching legal issues relevant to each case, through to interviewing clients and completing follow-up work, where required. The students also contribute to broader policy and law reform initiatives within the areas of employment and discrimination law.
This elective subject is open to University of Sydney Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Juris Doctor (JD) students in their penultimate or final year, and all students selected for enrolment received a $1,500 bursary from the USyd to support their study.
This is RLC's first clinic focused on employment, human rights and discrimination law. This semester, we are also running our second UTS International Student Clinic, and our second UNSW Police Powers Clinic. In addition, we continue to offer USyd law students placements through the Sydney Law School Social Justice Program and the 2017-2018 Summer Intensive program.
