Tenants who are having a dispute with their landlord about problems such as repairs, access, smoke alarms or condition reports can access the service as an alternative to having to lodge an application with the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal (CTTT).
The process involves a mediation conducted by a Fair Trading Officer. The parties will be encouraged to come to an agreement about their dispute. The process is non-binding and is not mandatory. If the parties can’t agree, either will still be able to apply to the CTTT to resolve the dispute.
RLC supports services that make it affordable and easy for tenants to resolve their disputes.
It’s important for tenants to get information and advice about their rights when they are using the dispute resolution service and tenants should seek legal advice from their local tenancy service or RLC on 9698 5975. RLC is also interested to hear from tenants about their experiences with the new dispute resolution service.
