The website was the result of months of work and community consultation undertaken by Fitzroy Legal Service, Hobart Community Legal Service and Redfern Legal Centre, to provide the community with fact sheets in relation to the rights of consumers accessing the NDIS scheme.
The website was created through funding allocated by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.
It seeks to provide both consumers and carers with fact sheets containing basic information about the rights of a person under the NDIS scheme, and what they can do if they feel their rights are not being recognised.
The fact sheets are intended to provide general information to the public and do not replace legal advice or advocacy. At this stage, the fact sheets on the website are accessible via download in PDF format, in Easy English, and MP3.
Former Redfern Legal Centre specialist discrimination solicitor Annette van Gent and Comedian and Disability Activist Stella Young were amongst those in attendance to support the official launch of the NDIS Rights website, held at Fitzroy Legal Service in September.
Sadly, Stella Young passed away on 6th December. Stella was a lifelong advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.
The NDIS website currently contains fact sheets in relation to the NDIS scheme; covering eligibility, advocacy, contracts, how to deal with service providers and access to information, negotiating with service providers in decision making, and discrimination. You can access the fact sheets here: www.ndisrights.org.au
