This decision from the Fair Work Commission will directly affect 2.7 million employees. Workers covered by modern awards will get an increase of at least 4.6%.
Low-income workers will now receive a minimum of $812.60 per week when pay rises take effect on 1 July. The FWC panel noted that this level of increase will protect the real value of the wages of the lowest-paid workers.
Redfern Legal Centre welcomes this boost in wages to support low-income workers. We urge all employees to check that you are being paid the current minimum of $21.38 per hour, and to make sure that your employer applies the increase to their first pay in the new financial year.
If you think you are being underpaid, contact Redfern Legal Centre's employment law service on 02 9698 7277.
