Joanna Shulman, Chief Executive Officer of Redfern Legal Centre and practitioner of human rights and discrimination law said today, "This decision is extremely disappointing - an important opportunity to protect the rights of the most vulnerable members of our society has been missed."
Redfern Legal Centre appeared alongside several other New South Wales Community Legal Centres at the Senate enquiry.
Ms Shulman commented, "We work with clients who experience discrimination because of a particular vulnerability, such as limited English or needed to care for a child who has a disability. The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Bill would have provided for a more accessible and fairer anti-discrimination regime for these most vulnerable members of our society."
"The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Bill would have introduced a more efficient and effective regime for organisations and individuals to address unlawful discrimination. Many of our clients simply cannot access justice under the current system," said Ms Shulman.
Redfern Legal Centre urges the Federal Government to reconsider their decision not to proceed with the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Bill.
