What is this webinar about?
During the COVID lockdown, Redfern Legal Centre assisted hundreds of people who were issued with fines for breaching public health rules. These fines were for $1,000, $3,000 or $5,000. Many were issued contrary to law, to children or to those living in low socio-economic areas.
In 2022, Redfern Legal Centre lodged a case in the Supreme Court that argued that the fines were invalid. RLC won the case. Overnight 33,000 COVID fines were withdrawn.
Samantha Lee, Senior Solicitor at RLC will take you through the Supreme Court case, the problem with the COVID fines and the impact of the case on future fines.
The webinar will be relevant to anyone who is interested in fines, policing and the justice system, particularly in NSW.
Presenter: Samantha Lee, Senior Solicitor at RLC's Police Accountability Practice
