Tip of the Week: Trial shifts at work

Have you ever been asked to do an unpaid trial shift when you apply for a new job?

Redfern Legal Centre often hear from international students about this. Most of the time this is not legal. You should be paid for any work you do.

Employers can ask you for a short demonstration of your ability to do the task but you should not have to do a full shift to show that you can do the job. If you are asked to do the work that benefits your employer just like any other worker then you should be paid.
