In a bid to flatten the COVID infection curve, Australian states and territories had rolled out strict restrictions throughout the pandemic, including caps on travel and movement outside the home. As with any top-down imposed limitations, there were violations thereof, for which the police in New South Wales, the largest state, could issue fines of AUD 1,000 (USD 670.60) per individual.
To probe the feasibility of such punishment, Redfern Legal Centre, a free legal service, launched a test case in July on behalf of three plaintiffs arguing their fines of between AUD 1,000 to AUD 3,000, were invalid because the penalty notices failed to sufficiently describe the offence.
