Redfern Legal Centre is the oldest community legal centre in NSW and is well established in the Redfern community. RLC was recently defunded by the NSW Department of Family & Community Services. This funding cut has significantly impaired our ability to provide legal services to the most vulnerable members of our community.
"The Attorney General's generous contribution means that RLC can continue to be a one-stop shop for the local community. Clients can receive advice in several of our areas of expertise in one place, rather than being referred to a series of organisations which runs the risk of disadvantaged clients slipping through the gaps," said Ms Shulman, CEO of Redfern Legal Centre.
In this climate of limited funding for community legal centres, RLC has been innovative in identifying need in our community and responding to it. We have recently launched a program that delivers expert legal advice via the NBN to international students living in Armidale.
We are also able to significantly expand our reach through the use of volunteers. RLC's work is supported by over 200 volunteer legal assistants and solicitors whose work has been valued at over 2 million dollars per year.
The funding provided by the Federal Attorney General's office will assist RLC to continue to provide legal services to the most disadvantaged members of the community.
