It was a triumphant night for RLC at the annual NSW Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Program (TAAP) Awards. RLC auspices the Inner Sydney Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Service (ISTAAS) and this year two RLC tenants’ advocates took home accolades.

In the August issue of the RLC eBulletin, we wrote that the recent increase in application fees to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) followed another increase just six months previous to it, when tenancy matters transitioned to NCAT.

On 8th September, the NSW Parliament’s Select Committee on Social, Public and Affordable Housing tabled its final report after a wide-reaching inquiry. A number of submissions made by RLC during the inquiry were drawn upon in the final report.

In Australia, unfair and oppressive rules introduced by some apartment buildings have seen a number of tenants summarily locked out of their homes, often over trivial matters. These tenants have found that local laws offer them little in the way of meaningful protection.

In March this year the Government announced that it would be selling all its properties in Millers Point, Dawes Point and The Rocks.

On 1st July 2014, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) increased its fees.

Following a fire in an overcrowded property in Alexandria on July 2, the City Hub has identified a series of up to 150 unauthorised boarding houses throughout the city, all of which appear to be part of a single operation.

On 19 March 2014, the Minister for Family and Community Services announced the NSW Government plan to sell 293 social housing properties in Millers Point, Dawes Point and The Rocks.
