It is possession, not use at some point in the past, that is the relevant offence under NSW law.
With 80 per cent of people searched having no drugs, it seems that officers working a drug-detection operation would know how infrequently they find drugs. Yet they persist in performing the searches. Standard procedure appears to be to search all people indicated by the dog regardless of any other circumstances, however relevant or reasonable.
Rigid reliance on such an inaccurate detection tool does not make members of the general public feel safe, it makes them feel threatened.
