Some high-profile offenders have received hefty fines, and even imprisonment, for breaching public health orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an understandable impulse in the community to support the severe punishments of rule-breakers after almost two years of lockdowns, restricted movements and heightened anxiety. But we need to ask ourselves: will a vengeful response achieve anything?
