This was a welcome opportunity to explain to the community what a 'yellow card' is in the context of domestic and family violence.
The Police attending a domestic violence event should offer the victim assistance to connect with support services to help that person with the range of issues about apprehended violence orders, emergency long term housing issues, counselling, financial problems, family law and so on. The Police do this by asking the person to sign a yellow card that the police then pass on to, in this area, Redfern Legal Centre's domestic violence workers. Those workers then call the person. If the person has changed their mind and does not want assistance, they can just say so. RLC encourages all people experiencing domestic or family violence to take up offers of advice and assistance including the Yellow Card.
