THANK YOU for supporting communities in crisis ❤️
On behalf of all the staff and volunteers at RLC we want to say thank you for supporting people in crisis during this incredibly challenging year.
As well as the many people who stand proudly by Redfern Legal Centre each year helping us maintain and grow our work, many new donors joined Team RLC this year.
This speaks to the immense generosity of our community even in the toughest times, and we are humbled and moved by your donations and messages of support.
A message from our staff to you
Helping people get through this
The support you've shown for our COVID-19 Crisis Appeal means that RLC is best placed to help more people in crisis as the fallout from COVID-19 continues to increase vulnerability and disadvantage.
Here are just some of the things we have achieved together over the last four months in response to COVID-19, and will continue to work on throughout the year:
- We achieved greater protections for renters across NSW during the pandemic. We will continue to work alongside other organisations across NSW to maintain the call for continued improvements to tenancy law.
- We launched an investigation into class actions to stop unlawful strip searches in NSW, working with Slater and Gordon Lawyers, which aims to prevent young people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from being disproportionately subjected to invasive police searches.
- We expanded our Financial Abuse Service NSW and launched the NSW Economic Abuse Reference Group, engaging more staff and volunteers and community partners to support greater numbers of people facing financial abuse during COVID-19.
- We helped to inform the implementation of a temporary crisis accommodation scheme for international students introduced by the NSW Government.
- We delivered online and face-to-face training sessions in a range of legal areas, supporting volunteers and pro bono solicitors, health workers, counsellors and other frontline workers so more people can get immediate legal help.
- With support from the NSW government and City of Sydney, we are providing over 70,000 free licences of RLC's multi-language legal assistance app, supporting international students in crisis with on-demand legal support in seven languages.
- We have broadened the reach of our Employment Law Service providing more support to migrant workers and people experiencing job losses as a result of COVID-19, and have continued to advocate for increased support for this vulnerable group.
- We have launched a new statewide advice service for people who have received fines for breaching COVID-19 public health orders.
-
Together with the National Justice Project, UTS Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, and Aboriginal Legal Service, we are running a free Black Lives Matter webinar on the need for policing and justice reform in Australia.
This is just a fraction of the work our team is carrying out. None of it would be possible without you.
Warm regards,
