Following the revelation that international students were living in shipping containers, buses and caravans in the Alexandria fire in early July, there has been growing concern about the unscrupulous behaviour of landlords and head tenants in Sydney.
Recent investigations by City Hub and ABC’s 7:30 have also profiled individuals operating large networks of housing targeting international students.
RLC has a number of resources to assist international students in their share houses including:
- An International Students’ Guide to Share Housing video with captions that can be easily translated on YouTube
- The Share Housing Survival Guide website with useful links like ‘Common traps to watch out for' and ‘What is my legal position?’
- A suggested share housing agreement to use when moving into a share house.
RLC also runs a free statewide legal service for international students. Call (02) 9698 7277 to book an appointment.
