Redfern Legal Centre has filed another NSW Supreme Court application seeking the withdrawal of a COVID fine on the grounds of invalidity. 33,000 COVID fines were withdrawn following the first Supreme Court case in late 2022, and 29,000 remain.
All remaining COVID-19-related fines in NSW, worth tens of millions of dollars, could be cancelled following a fresh court challenge which aims to have a specific type of fine issued during lockdowns declared invalid.
Former NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and the NSW Police are facing a formal complaint over their “heavy-handed approach” in issuing more than 60,000 COVID-19 fines between March 2020 and September 2022.
