Samantha Lee, Supervising Solicitor at Redfern Legal Centre, said:
“All children should be able to travel safely and freely to school, work, community events, or to visit family and friends – regardless of where they live or their financial situation.”
“These fines are often issued to young people who simply can’t afford public transport fares – let alone the cost of a heavy fine they have no means to repay,” Ms Lee said.
Fines disproportionately affect children from marginalised backgrounds and can have lasting consequences on their wellbeing and future opportunities.
“Providing free transport for children is not just about affordability – it’s about equity, access to education, and ensuring no child is penalised simply for trying to get to school, work, or an appointment.”
Children in Victoria will soon travel for free, while in Queensland, public transport for everyone is capped at a flat rate of 50 cents.
“With the cost-of-living crisis hitting NSW families hard, it’s time for the government to act. This is a practical, realistic step that would ease pressure on families and ensure all children can get where they need to go – without the risk of a crippling fine,” Ms Lee said.
