Credit is an area in which consumers are particularly vulnerable to unscrupulous practices, so strong regulation is necessary to prevent industry participants taking advantage of a lack of understanding on the part of consumers.

We recommend stricter provisions with respect to notices on licensee’s premises and websites, restrictions on when licensees may enter into small amount credit contracts, and that licensees be obliged to make several attempts to contact clients to alert them to a default arising from an unsuccessful direct debit.
