Submission to the inquiry into financial services regulatory framework in relation to financial abuse

Submission to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services inquiry into the financial services regulatory framework in relation to financial abuse. 

Redfern Legal Centre’s (RLC) Financial Abuse Service NSW (FAS) leads the Economic Abuse Reference Group (EARG) and authored the group’s submission, which responds to all terms of reference for this inquiry. 

The EARG submission and recommendations draw heavily from the expertise FAS has developed in providing assistance to victim survivors of financial abuse since our inception in 2019, and prior to this time, RLC’s credit, debt and consumer law practice since 1977. 

We provide this short supplementary submission to provide the Committee with an overview of the Financial Abuse Service NSW model in response to the following Terms of Reference: 1. The prevalence and impact of financial abuse; and 6. The funding and operation of relevant advisory and advocacy bodies.
