Information about domestic violence

Even if the person says they are sorry, offers you gifts, or promises to never do it again, domestic abuse is wrong. It’s important to be able to recognise the signs so you can stay safe.

Abusive relationships can occur between partners, ex-partners, parents and children or other people you live with and see often. 

The signs of domestic violence include:

• Hitting or sexual abuse 
• Being threatened, criticised or yelled at
• Being prevented from spending time with your friends and family
• Monitoring your emails, phone calls and movements 
• Blocking or controlling your access to money
• Making threats of self harm if you try to leave. 

If this is happening to you and you fear for your safety, go to a safe place where you can call for help by dialling 000.

Remember that any kind of abuse is unlawful and there are laws in Australia that will protect you.
