People in Coffs Harbour will receive free face-to-face legal advice from specialist solicitors at Redfern Legal Centre via webcam appointments. People can either attend the Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre for their appointment or use their computers at home.
Coffs Harbour Neighbourhood Centre manager Anna Gleeson commented:
From what we see in the community, there’s a real need for free and accessible legal advice here in Coffs.
While the local services provide invaluable assistance, there’s always a constant demand for more. We’re very excited to be using this technology to help reach more people and address their needs.
Redfern Legal Centre solicitor Kate Gauld commented, “As the oldest community legal centre in New South Wales, our top priority has always been assisting people to assert their rights and access justice. We’re thrilled to be working with the Neighbourhood Centre and people from Coffs to do just that.”
The service is part of the Australian Government’s regional legal assistance program, designed to promote greater access to legal services for regional Australia.
“I commend Redfern Legal Centre on the development of this innovative service,” said the Attorney-General, Senator George Brandis.
“This initiative will enhance access to justice for people living in regional Australia.”
People can receive advice in a range of legal areas including: police and government complaints; credit, debt and consumer complaints; employment; discrimination and human rights.
Jenni Eakins, Director of Community Development at Coffs Harbour City Council, will officially launch the service at 10:00am on Thursday 5th December at the Coffs Harbour Digital Hub.
The launch will be in Coffs Harbour on Thursday 5 December, 10:00am at the Coffs Harbour Digital Hub (City Centre Square, opposite the Palms Centre, Harbour Drive). A short presentation will follow from solicitors from Redfern Legal Centre. Morning tea will be served at 11.15am.
