When police charged Ella’s partner with assault and applied for an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order to protect Ella and her two children, Sydney WDVCAS found accommodation at a refuge for them.
However, Ella felt unable to leave home without the pets, knowing they were likely to suffer further abuse at the hands of her partner, who had previously made threats to kill the animals.
The Safe Beds for Pets program was contacted and arrangements were made for the pets to be cared for until such time as Ella and the children could find pet-friendly accommodation. Ella and the children moved into the refuge and within twelve weeks they were housed in pet-friendly environment and the pets were able to return to the family.
