The program has been criticised for disproportionately targeting young people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, with the NSW police commissioner telling state parliament more than half of the people on the STMP were Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
"Police harassment of young people is neither a fair nor an effective way to prevent their offending," says UNSW's Dr Vicki Sentas, convenor of RLC's police powers clinic.
