Sam Lee explains that RLC is calling greater transparency around this predictive policing program, which targets children as young a nine years using a hidden blacklist. Research shows that over 50% of people placed under police surveillance by the STMP are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and 20% are young people.
“The alarming problem is that these young people haven’t even committed a crime before they have been put on the blacklist and will be entrenched into the criminal justice system unnecessarily, which will have a detrimental impact on their lives.”
Additionally, research has shown that there is little evidence proving that the program prevents crime and there are significant issues around the lack of transparency behind the program.
We believe that “people who are on the blacklist should be told they are on the list, why they are on the list and given the option to be taken off it.”
