Protesters who block traffic on bridges and tunnels will face up to two years in jail and a $22,000 fine under harsh new penalties announced in NSW on 24 March 2022.
Speaking to Sydney Morning Herald, RLC’s police accountability solicitor said this “one size fits all” approach could impact people at many forms of peaceful protest into the future.
“For example, in the year 2000 over 250,000 people walked over the Harbour Bridge in support of reconciliation in Australia. This expanded use of police powers may have unforeseen consequences,” she said.
