Position Vacant: Solicitor – Migrant Employment Service
Redfern Legal Centre is seeking to fill a Graduate Lawyer position for 12 months within the newly established Migrant Employment Service.
Inner City Legal Centre, Marrickville Legal Centre, Redfern Legal Centre, and Kingsford Legal Centre provide access to justice through the provision of legal services, including community legal education, particularly for people who are disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances.
In a joint project, the Centres are establishing a state-wide legal service to address the employment exploitation of migrant workers. Migrant workers face many barriers to accessing legal support to recover unpaid wages including: language barriers; unfamiliarity with the Australian legal system; fear of immigration consequences; limited time in Australia to pursue a claim; and a belief that they would not be successful.
This position will be based at the Redfern Legal Centre office and will liaise with the project’s coordinator, community worker and solicitors in various locations. The role will include the opportunity to undertake court advocacy and represent clients in conciliations.
Status: The position is part time (28 hours per week) for 12 months.
Salary and benefits: $77,308 – $82,258 p.a. ($61,846 - $65,806 for 28 hours per week) depending on qualifications and experience.
Superannuation and annual leave loading is paid in addition to this and salary packaging* is available. In addition to being a flexible workplace, RLC offers a 35-hour working week, time in lieu options and a paid Christmas closure of 2 weeks (including public holidays) on top of 4 weeks annual leave.
* As a Public Benevolent Institution, Redfern Legal Centre is able to offer staff generous salary packaging options. The tax savings for a staff member choosing to take full advantage of the salary packaging option mean that their take-home salary may be increased by up to $6,000 per annum.
Redfern Legal Centre welcomes applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from diverse cultural backgrounds and people with disability.
Applications close: 9am Monday 19 August 2019. Applications received after 9am will not be considered.
Interviews will be held on the afternoon of Thursday 22 August.
Applications that do not specifically address the selection criteria will not be considered.
